Attendance and Term-Time Absence: What Parents and Carers Need to Know
At St Peter & St Paul CE Primary School, we are committed to maintaining high levels of attendance to support every child’s learning, wellbeing, and development. Regular attendance is essential — even occasional absences can disrupt progress and confidence.
Term-Time Holidays and Unauthorised Absence
Taking your child out of school during term time, whether for holidays or other reasons, can lead to unauthorised absences. If a child misses 10 or more sessions (5 days) without agreement, families may receive a Penalty Notice from the Local Authority.
We kindly ask all families to plan holidays during official school breaks. If you believe there are exceptional circumstances, please submit a written request to the school as early as possible. Each case will be considered individually.
Penalty Notices and Legal Action
Penalty Notices are issued under the Education Act 1996. The escalation process is as follows:
Notice |
Details |
First Notice (within 3 years) |
£80 if paid within 21 days, £160 if paid within 28 days |
Second Notice (within 3 years) |
£160 flat rate if paid within 28 days |
Third Notice (within 3 years) |
May lead to prosecution or other legal interventions. Fines are capped at two per parent within three years. If prosecuted, parents could face a magistrates court appearance and a fine of up to £2,500 and/or prison. Convictions may appear on future DBS certificates. |
We want to emphasise that fines are a last resort. Our priority is to work with families to support good attendance and address any barriers together.
