British Sign Language (BSL)

British Sign Language (BSL) is an important part of life at our school. We use signing regularly in lessons, Collective Worship and singing so every child can be seen, heard and involved, reflecting our school vision and values..

Children learn core signing vocabulary and receptive skills so they can communicate respectfully with others, learn about Deaf culture and disability, and help build an inclusive school community. Learning BSL develops collaboration, confidence and compassion while giving children practical tools to include peers with diverse communication needs.

BSL is taught through short, regular lessons and is practised throughout the school day. Teaching uses modelling, repetition, paired and group work, storytelling and signing songs, with opportunities for children to perform and to use signs in Collective Worship and assemblies. Staff use simple classroom signs to normalise signing and to scaffold inclusion, and activities are planned to engage children and encourage exploration of different ways to communicate.

As a result, children use signing confidently in everyday interactions, worship and performances, and show greater awareness of accessibility and Deaf culture. They include and support one another more readily, demonstrate empathy and respect, and contribute to a school culture where communication barriers are reduced and all children can participate.

We encourage families to use signing at home and in the wider community so learning continues beyond the classroom. Children are supported to share signs with relatives, neighbours and at community events, helping to promote inclusion outside school and strengthening connections between our school, families and the local area.
