Year Class 6
Teacher: – Mr David Hurdman BSc, PGCE
After starting my own education in the local area, events have come full circle as I am now Deputy Headteacher at St. Peter and St. Paul CE Primary School. Following my secondary education in Skegness, in 2000 I graduated from the University of Warwick with a Mathematics degree. I then completed a PGCE at Bishop Grossteste College in Lincoln. At my previous school I was a member of the Senior Leadership Team, holding the post of Key Stage 2 co-ordinator and, most recently, Acting Deputy Headteacher. I have taught in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and am currently on Lincolnshire's Leading Maths Teacher team. I am subject leader for ICT and Numeracy.
Mr David Hurdman is also the Deputy Headteacher
2008 News (updated September 2008)
SCIENCE
Sound - We will generalise that sounds are produced when objects vibrate and suggest how to change the pitch and loudness of the sounds produced by a range of musical instruments. By the end of the topic we will recognise that sounds travel through solids, water and air, be able to suggest how to investigate how well sound travels through different materials and say how good our good our evidence is.
Forces in action - We will apply our knowledge of a variety of forces, including magnetic attraction, gravitational attraction and friction. We will learn about the changes in motion which occur when forces act on an object. We will also develop and awareness that forces have direction and can be measured.
Changing circuits - This unit is intended to revise concepts introduced in Year 2 and Year 4. The topic consolidates knowledge of materials which are electrical conductors, extends understanding of ways in which the brightness of bulbs or speed of motors in a circuit can be changed and develops understanding of the value of using conventional symbols for communication.
THROUGH THE AGES
History through the life of famous people - In our work on ‘Through the Ages' we will be looking at recent history by studying the lives and influence of famous people, predominantly John Lennon. In our topic work we will also be looking at (or should that be listening to?) the work of Lennon and the Beatles. We will learn about the cultural and social significance of many lyrics and how that meaning should be reflected in performance as well as in the composition itself. We will be having a go at composing our own lyrics to existing tunes. Year 6 are also fortunate enough to be working on a second ‘Through the Ages' topic with Miss Smith, focussing on archaeology.
ICT
Internet Proficiency - Using ‘safe' simulations, we have already been learning about safe practise when using a range of communication tools such as the Internet, e-mail, instant messaging and mobile phones. We will then be equipped to use the internet safely and efficiently throughout our work. Check out www.thinkuknow.com for more information and activities. Presenting information in a range of electronic forms is also an ongoing ICT theme throughout our work in all subjects.
ART
Painting and colour - In this unit we will be working with Mr. Pickett, exploring the work of recognised artists such as Andy Warhol, building up our skills to paint and create images in a similar style. Mr Hurdman retains the rights to any work that is likely to fetch money in auction!
PE/GAMES
Indoor Athletics/Hockey - In games, we will be developing our hockey skills. To allow us to get the most out of these sessions, the class will be split into 2 groups, with each group working on their skills for a five-week block. The children are aware of which group they are in. In PE, we will be developing our indoor athletics skills across a range of events including standing long jump, standing triple jump, speed bounce and sprinting. Please make sure PE kits are in school on Monday and that they go home for a wash on Friday!
RE
Christian Worship and Festivals - Across the term year 6 are responsible for weekly readings and prayers in assembly, as well as leading acts of worship in church. Our work in class will explore this in more detail. Everybody will, at some stage this year, read in assembly and in church!
