Reception Class

Teacher: Miss K Holmes BSc

I trained at Ripon & York St John and I graduated with QTS (qualified Teacher Status) with a degree in Environmental & Biological Sciences. I have been teaching at Burgh-le-Marsh Primary for 6 years. I am responsible for leading Science and R.E. Recently I have been acting as the assessment leader.

Outdoor Learning Area
The new outdoor learning environment is now complete. It is proving to be extremely successful in enhancing children's learning and adding to their enjoyment of school. The garden is beginning to bloom with all thanks going to the children as it has been all their hard work. The playhouse has arrived and the teaching assistants are busy making curtains. We look forward to developing the area further.

Learning to Read

On Monday 15th September your child will bring home a reading pack. The pack will contain a picture book (containing a story told through the use of pictures only) and a reading record book. All of the picture books contain a ‘parents prompts & questions page' on each of the inside covers. These adult sections are excellent in encouraging your child to develop an early understanding and love of simple stories. This discussion of stories is an important first step in your child learning to read and develop an understanding of the reading process. There are six titles that your child will bring home before moving onto books containing a small range of words. Your child's reading book will be changed at school once your child demonstrates they have shared the story at home with you. Books will be changed up to twice a week. Any queries please don't hesitate to ask!

My History Topic

If possible can your child bring a baby photograph into school (with their name written on the back). They will be looking at changes in their own history. Thank you!

Reminders

•  Please could your child bring a pair of Wellington boots (named) to school which can remain at school for the entire school year. These are needed for outdoor play activities.

•  Reception PE days are on Mondays & Fridays. PE kits to be in school on a Monday morning and they will be sent home each Friday afternoon.

•  Milk is provided for all children under the age of 5 (if you have requested it). Unfortunately when your child turns 5 this milk will stop, your child may want to bring an alternative drink for morning snack time or I am happy to chill a small carton of milk brought from home. Please name! Free fruit will be offered to your child each morning snack time. Free fruit is available for all children until the end of Key Stage One (year 2).

I' m looking forward to a successful year with the class and I hope your child's first year at school will be both rewarding and enjoyable. If you have any questions or worries please don't hesitate to come and see me!
